Dogs and Mulch
The season for yard work is upon us, which also heralds the return of mulch to our landscaped beds. There are some things you should consider if you have a new dog or dog you suspect or know will snack on your landscaping.
Eating mulch can be dangerous. Pieces may puncture the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract, cause a blockage, cause choking, or cause digestive problems such as diarrhea or vomiting.
If you’re reluctant to get rid of the mulch, consider trying the following options first:
• Install and Invisible Fence around your beds to keep the dogs away from the landscaping;
• Install a decorative barrier fence that’s a couple of feet high to discourage your pet from trespassing on your beds;
• Try crushed stone mulch (If you use this in a sunny area you’ll need to select drought-resistant plants)
Finally, avoid using cocoa bean mulch in areas where unsupervised dogs may spend time. The mulch is made from crushed cacao shells, which contain caffeine and theobromine and can be toxic to dogs. Those two substances are also found in baker's chocolate and chocolate bars. The chocolate aroma of the mulch is attractive to many dogs, and according to the ASPCA, "Eaten by a 50-pound dog, about 2 ounces of cocoa bean mulch may cause gastrointestinal upset; about 4.5 ounces, increased heart rate; about 5.3 ounces, seizures; and over 9 ounces, death." The size of the dog and relative amount of mulch consumed will be a major factor in the severity of the response.
If you suspect your dog has eaten cocoa mulch, immediately contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.
Margie
This young Akita mix is looking for a true forever home. It has been a long road for this sweet girl. Pregnant and ready to have her puppies, Margie lost her first home in a house fire. The puppies were born and they all found families of their own, but Margie is still patiently waiting her turn at the shelter. Margie is learning to love people and will gently take a treat from every person she meets. She is even beginning to seek out their affection! And if you just give her a few minutes of your time, you’ll get to see the fun loving, affectionate girl that we have come to love. True to her breed, she is a bit selective of her canine companions, but she might be willing to share a home with the right dog. If you would like to make Margie’s dream come true and give her the forever home that she has longed for, come see her at the shelter! Or, contact her adoption consultant, Barb, at 440-427-9601 for more information. Margie will make a loving companion for some lucky family!
Rachel
Rachel has been spayed and front & back declawed. She was about three years old when she was brought in to the shelter on 1/25/07. Her original mom had to go into a nursing home. She REALLY needs a new home of her own!!! Weighing in at just under 18 pounds, Rachel is a voluptuous little gal. She is a very sweet cat who loves attention and is surprisingly playful for a cat her size. Rachel is a very curious cat, she found her way into the upstairs neighbor's apartment in one of the foster homes she was in. The neighbor was very surprised to see this chunky black cat running through his kitchen! We believe she needs to be in a home without other cats, but dogs seem to be OK. She certainly stood up to the dog in her foster home very well--if he got too nosy, she'd give him a playful an occasional pop on the nose, but she refused to run from him so he quickly lost interest. Rachel is a great big cat with a great big heart and a lot of love and joy to give.
