House of Crafts - Gingerbread House (without the gingerbread)

GINGERBREAD HOUSE (WITHOUT THE GINGERBREAD)

  • A piece of scrap plywood or a kitchen cutting board covered in foil (approximately 12” x 12”) for base
  • A box of graham crackers (each piece should be 5” x 2 ½”)…don’t get the smaller ones, you’ll have too many to glue!
  • Royal icing….Beat 3 egg whites until stiff.  Add 1 ½ tsp. cream of tartar and 3 ½ cups of powdered sugar.  Beat until smooth and put in a zip lock bag.  Snip a little piece of the corner for your pastry bag.
Glue 2 pieces of graham crackers together with your royal icing.  Repeat 7 more times and let set about 15-20 minutes.  Glue the sides of your house together and again, let set.  Glue your roof onto your house and again, let set.  Draw a template of the front and back peak of your house on paper, cut it out and place the pattern over the two remaining graham cracker pieces.  With a sharp knife, poke a series of holes along the template and snap off the unwanted pieces.  Be very careful not to crack the piece you want.  This might take a couple of tries!  Glue your triangles to the front and back peaks of your house.  Let it set.

Now it’s time to decorate.  Here’s some decorating ideas for your gingerbread house and remember, the royal icing is your “glue” for the house….
