How to Plant an Herb Garden
Nancy Alden

According to our friends from Petitti Garden Centers, it’s very easy to do and you can start now! Start with some herb seeds, such as rosemary, basil, thyme and parsley. Pop a few seeds into the center of small peat pots you can purchase at any garden center, and water gently until each pot is well-saturated. Cover with a plastic dome and place under a plant light to create a greenhouse effect. Once the plants are an inch or so high, in a couple of weeks, you can remove the dome and water using a spray bottle until the stems are strong enough to be watered with a sprinkler. Heat and light are key to the herbs getting off to a good start! There are also hydroponic herb planting systems you can buy in the stores, which require very little attention as well. You can replant the herbs outside as it warms up with the onset of spring. Angelo Petitti suggest waiting until mid May or Memorial Day to plant your basil, as it’s very sensitive to frost.  There’s nothing like fresh herbs in your food to add a fresh taste to your cooking!
